Fort Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated
The Fort Valley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. had its beginning during the early nineteen forties in Fort Valley, Georgia. This small farm town was known for it agricultural crops, the production of peaches and the manufacturing of school buses. It is also home for Fort Valley State University, a historically black institution founded in 1895. Fort Valley has a population of 9, 800. It is located in Middle Georgia in Peach county which emerged from Houston County in 1924. The chapter, first known as the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter, was chartered May 28, 1943.
The women of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. a public service organization, were becoming recognized on the campus of Fort Valley State College prior to becoming organized as a chapter. They were instrumental in providing leadership for programs such as May Week activities, special interest projects, as well as educational and cultural events through a student organization known as the T.I.D. Club (Those Intending to be Deltas).
These Delta women came to Fort Valley from different geographical locations with various professional backgrounds, but all of them had a common interest in the academic mission of Fort Valley State College and surrounding community. Combined with this mission was a desire to promote the public service commitment of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. with each bringing her special and unique contribution of skill and spirit. This began the organizational infrastructure of the Fort Valley Alumnae Chapter, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.
